Profile balancing is performed using dermal filler to restore the harmony of the face from a side profile. The areas focused on depends on the individual, however most commonly we focus on the upper and/or lower lip, the chin and the nose. Profile balancing creates a more youthful appearance. The idea of having a specific relationship between the nose, lips and chin from a side perspective dates back to the 1950s and findings of the orthodontist Dr. Robert Ricketts. The 'E' plane is simply a line from the apex of the nose the the apex of the chin. Dr. Ricketts believed that in order to have an aesthetically pleasing side profile, that the lower lip should sit 2mm behind, and the upper lip 4mm behind this line.
